Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification
PEFC™ (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is a leading global alliance of national forest certification systems. As an international nongovernmental, nonprofit organization, it is dedicated to promoting sustainable forest management through independent third-party certification.
On the one hand, such certification enables forest owners to demonstrate the sustainable management of their forests, and on the other hand, it enables businesses and consumers to select products from sustainable sources. Forest certification increases the value of forests by building consumer confidence and thus creating additional demand for forest products. Increasing value and demand for such products is one of the best ways to conserve forests, as it prevents forest land from being diverted for alternative land uses, such as agriculture.
Forest certification is a voluntary tool that impacts the market, implemented through two separate but connected processes: sustainable forest management certification and chain of custody certification.
